Laura Kavanagh was sworn in on Thursday October 27th, during an emotional ceremony at Engine 33, Ladder 9, in lower Manhattan. This is the same firehouse where the first fire Fire Commissioner John J. Scannell had his office.
Commissioner Kavanagh comes into the top position of the Fire Department at a time when crime is up in NYC. We recently saw the murder of EMS Captain Allison Russo in Queens, one of the more horrific incidents since that of EMT Yadira Arroyo's murder in the Bronx.
In Staten Island off-duty EMT Ashley Diaz was the victim of a vehicle accident in which she was struck by a unlicensed driver who was allegedly using drugs and then tried to cover it up. EMT Diaz spent 50 days in the hospital and lost her right leg as a result.
With all the accomplishments that have been attributed to Commissioner Kavanaugh since she joined the FDNY, one can hope that reducing violence against First Responders becomes one of them.
This is not just a NYC problem, but a growing problem around the world, maybe change can start here in NYC.
